After electrolysis, good aftercare helps reduce irritation, supports healing and protect your skin.

If you’re wondering what’s normal after electrolysis — and what to avoid — here’s a clear and practical guide.

First 24 hours after electrolysis

It’s normal to experience:

  • Mild redness

  • Slight swelling

  • Warmth in the treated area

  • Small raised bumps

This is a normal inflammatory response to treatment inside the follicle.

✅ What to do:

  • Keep the area clean

  • Avoid touching or picking

  • Use a gentle, soothing product as advised

❌ What to avoid:

  • Makeup on the treated area

  • Heavy creams

  • Intense exercise

  • Saunas or steam

  • Swimming pools

  • Sun exposure

  • Keeping the area calm is key.

Days 2–3 after electrolysis

Any redness should be settling down by now.

You may notice:

  • Mild dryness

  • Tiny micro-scabs

  • Slight tenderness

❌ Do not pick or rub the area. Micro-scabbing can be part of normal healing. Picking increases the risk of pigmentation, scarring and delays recovery.

✅ Continue with:

  • Gentle cleansing

  • Light moisturiser

  • Daily SPF

Avoid retinol, acids, exfoliants and strong active skincare.

Days 4–7

For most people, skin looks and feels close to normal by this stage. The healing time varies depending on the area treated and your individual skin response.

Electrolysis aftercare checklist

✔ Keep the area clean

✔ Don’t pick

✔ Avoid heat and sweating for 24-48 hours

✔ Avoid active skincare

✔ Wear SPF

✔ Don’t pluck, thread or wax between sessions

Simple, consistent aftercare supports smoother skin and better long-term permanent hair removal results.

Q&A

First 24 hours

Q. Can I wear makeup after electrolysis?

A. It’s best to avoid makeup on the treated area for at least 24 hours, especially foundation and concealer, as they can trap bacteria or irritants.

Q. Can I exercise straight after my appointment?

A. It’s advisable to avoid intense exercise for 24 hours. Heavy sweating and heat can increase inflammation and prolong redness while the skin is healing and settling following treatment.

Q. Can I touch or cleanse the area straight away?

A. You can gently cleanse the area later the same day, but avoid excessive touching, rubbing or picking. Keeping the skin clean and calm is key during the first 24 hours.

Days 2–3

Q. Is it normal to have small scabs after electrolysis?

A. Yes, tiny micro-scabs can be part of the normal healing process, particularly in areas with dense or coarse hair. They should be left alone and allowed to come away naturally.

Q. When can I use retinol or exfoliating acids again?

A. It’s best to wait at least 72 hours before reintroducing active skincare such as retinol, glycolic acid or salicylic acid — and only if the skin feels completely calm and unbroken.

Q. Why does the area still feel slightly tender?

A. Electrolysis creates a controlled treatment response inside each follicle. Mild tenderness for a few days is normal as the skin repairs itself.

Q. When will my skin look completely back to normal?

A. For most people, visible redness settles within a few days. Surface healing is typically complete within one week, although deeper healing continues beneath the skin.

Q. Should I wear SPF after electrolysis?

A. Yes. Daily broad-spectrum SPF is strongly recommended if the treated area is exposed to daylight. Sun exposure can increase the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation while the skin is healing.

Q. Does proper aftercare really affect my results?

A. Yes. While electrolysis permanently treats the follicle, good aftercare reduces the risk of irritation, pigmentation and delayed healing — helping your skin recover smoothly between sessions.
