Choosing an electrologist is about more than convenience or price. Electrolysis is a medical-grade skin treatment, and the practitioner you choose can have a direct impact on your skin health, comfort, healing, and long-term results.
If you’ve had a previous reaction, experienced discomfort, or simply want to feel confident you’re in safe hands, asking the right questions before starting electrolysis is essential.
Below are key questions to ask a potential electrologist — along with how I approach them in my own electrolysis practice.
Quick electrolysis consultation checklist
If you’re comparing practitioners, these are important questions to ask before booking treatment:
Are you qualified in electrolysis, and what certifications do you hold?
Are you fully insured, registered, and licensed by your local council?
What electrolysis machine do you use?
What modality do you use — and why?
What type of needles or probes do you use?
How do you assess my skin and hair before starting treatment?
Do you offer an initial consultation and provide patch testing before electrolysis?
What aftercare do you provide following treatment?
Do you supply professional aftercare products for home use?
My answers to these questions
Q. Are you qualified in electrolysis?
Yes. I hold a VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Electrical Epilation (Electrolysis Hair Removal) and a VTCT Level 4 Diploma in Advanced Electrolysis, which also allows me to safely treat certain skin blemishes.
These nationally recognised qualifications ensure electrolysis treatments are carried out to the highest professional, clinical, and safety standards, with a strong emphasis on skin health and precision.
Q. Are you insured and licensed?
Yes. I am fully insured, registered, and licensed by Sevenoaks District Council. My treatment room and working practices were inspected in person to ensure they meet strict health, safety, and hygiene regulations.
This licensing provides reassurance that electrolysis treatments are delivered in a safe, compliant, and professionally regulated environment.
Q. What electrolysis machine do you use?
I work with the Apilus xCell Pur, one of the most advanced electrolysis machines available worldwide.
This technology allows for extremely precise energy delivery, meaning treatments can be both highly effective and gentler on the skin. Advanced settings help reduce unnecessary skin trauma, improve client comfort, and support faster, healthier healing.
Q. What modality do you use — and why?
Electrolysis can be performed using thermolysis or blend. Each works slightly differently, and both have their place.
Thermolysis uses heat to destroy the follicle and is often faster, making it ideal for finer hair and efficient treatment. Blend combines heat with a mild chemical reaction and can be particularly effective for deeper or more stubborn hairs.
It’s important that your electrologist feels confident using both modalities. Different skin and hair types respond differently, and a personalised approach allows treatment to be adapted for the most effective results with minimal unnecessary skin reaction.
During your consultation — and patch test (if appropriate) — I will often trial both modalities to see which treats your hair most effectively while keeping the surrounding skin calm. Your treatment plan is then tailored specifically to you.
Q. What type of needles or probes do you use?
Skin protection during electrolysis is essential. I use IsoGard and IsoBlend insulated needles, which are single-use, sterile, and brand new for every client.
Insulated probes help concentrate energy directly at the hair follicle while reducing heat transfer to the surrounding skin. This increases treatment efficiency while offering greater comfort and enhanced skin protection compared to standard stainless steel needles.
Q. What aftercare do you provide?
After every electrolysis treatment, I provide my signature cataphoresis aftercare ritual, designed to calm, soothe, and rebalance the skin immediately post-treatment. Cataphoresis helps reduce redness, supports healing, and restores the skin barrier.
Each client also receives a pot of Action de Gala Yi-Zhibaume Cream, a professional aftercare balm containing carefully selected ingredients to soothe irritation, protect the skin, and support healthy skin regeneration at home.
Q. Do you assess my skin before treatment?
Yes. Every client receives a thorough consultation before treatment. I assess skin type, hair characteristics, medical history, medications, and previous treatment experiences.
This allows me to tailor electrolysis settings and techniques specifically to your skin — rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
Q. Do you offer consultations and patch testing?
I always carry out an initial consultation and patch test before progressing with treatment. This allows me to observe how your skin responds and adjust treatment accordingly.
Patch testing is particularly important for clients with sensitive skin or those who have experienced previous reactions or discomfort with electrolysis.
Final thoughts: choosing the right electrologist
Electrolysis is a safe and highly effective permanent hair removal treatment when performed correctly, using appropriate training, equipment, and aftercare.
Asking these questions empowers you to choose an electrologist who prioritises skill, safety, skin integrity, and long-term results — not just quick clearances.
