How to manage hair growth between electrolysis sessions

Hair removal isn’t new. In fact, it’s ancient. People have been plucking, pulling and shaving their hair for thousands of years.
Fast forward to today, and the methods have multiplied—waxing, threading, sugaring, laser, razors etc and of course, electrolysis.
So, with all these options, why is it that at ElectroGlow, I ask you not to wax, tweeze, or thread between electrolysis appointments—but shaving or trimming is absolutely fine?
Let’s break it down with a little science and biology.
The hair growth cycle – Why timing is everything
Hair grows in cycles—specifically, three main stages:
Anagen (active growth)
Catagen (transition)
Telogen (resting/shedding)
Electrolysis is most effective when the hair is in the anagen phase, because that’s when the hair is firmly attached to the root (a.k.a. the dermal papilla, which feeds the hair follicle). That’s the bit I want to disable to stop that hair from growing back.
Here’s the problem with waxing, tweezing, or threading
These methods remove the hair from inside the follicle and this interferes with your natural growth cycle. It becomes harder to predict when that hair will reappear, and we might miss our window to treat it effectively.
Why shaving and trimming is a YES!
Shaving and trimming remove the hair at or just above skin level. They leave the follicle intact and don’t disrupt the natural rhythm of your hair’s growth.
That means:
✅ We can see the hair clearly when it comes through.
✅ It’s more likely to be in the active phase.
✅ Your treatment plan stays on track.
I totally understand the temptation to reach for the tweezers in between treatments, but think of electrolysis as a marathon, not a sprint. By shaving or trimming between sessions, you’re preserving all the hard work we’re doing to get you to smooth, fuzz-free skin—permanently.
At ElectroGlow, I’m here for both the self-care and the science—because when you understand your body, you’re better equipped to care for it 🩷
