Thermolysis vs Blend Electrolysis: Which modality is best?

TL;DR

If you’ve been told one type of electrolysis is “better” than another, the truth is a little more nuanced. It’s not about one being right and the other wrong—it’s about choosing the right approach for your hair, your skin, and your goals.

In this blog, you’ll learn:

  • How thermolysis and blend electrolysis actually work

  • Why thermolysis is often faster, but blend can be more effective for certain hair types

  • How factors like coarse, hormonal, or distorted hairs influence the choice of modality

  • Why practitioner skill plays a bigger role than the method itself

  • And, how a tailored approach leads to the best long-term results

If you’ve ever felt confused about which modality is “best,” this will help you understand what really matters—and how to choose the right treatment for you.

If you’re researching electrolysis, you may come across the terms:

  • Thermolysis

  • Blend

And naturally, the next question is: “Which electrolysis modality is best?”

The honest answer?

It depends on your skin, your hair type, and the area being treated.

What is thermolysis in electrolysis?

Thermolysis uses controlled heat to destroy the hair follicle.

It is:

  • Fast

  • Precise

  • Efficient

  • Ideal for finer hair

  • Excellent for larger areas or higher density growth

Modern machines (like the Apilus xCell) allow very refined thermolysis settings, making treatment both effective and comfortable.

What is blend electrolysis?

Blend combines two actions:

  • Heat (like thermolysis)

  • A mild chemical reaction created within the follicle

This makes it particularly useful for:

  • Coarse or deeply rooted hairs

  • Distorted follicles

  • Stubborn hormonal hair

  • Areas where hairs have been tweezed for years

Blend can sometimes feel slightly slower, but it can be very effective in certain situations.

Which electrolysis modality is best?

There is no universal “best” method.

The best modality is the one that:

  • Effectively destroys the follicle

  • Causes minimal unnecessary skin reaction

  • Matches your hair type

  • Matches your skin sensitivity

This is why it’s important to choose an electrologist who is confident using both thermolysis and blend.

Electrolysis should always be personalised to you, your skin and hair type.

Why modality flexibility matters

If a practitioner only uses one modality, treatment decisions are limited.

Being comfortable with both methods allows for:

  • Tailored treatment plans

  • Better decision-making based on real-time skin response

  • Adaptation for hormonal hair

  • Reduced overtreatment

This flexibility can improve both results and skin recovery.

My approach at ElectroGlow Studio

During your initial consultation — and patch test (if appropriate) — I will often trial both thermolysis and blend.

This allows me to assess:

  • How your skin responds

  • How easily the hair releases

  • Which modality achieves effective treatment with the calmest skin response

Your treatment is then tailored specifically to you.

Electrolysis is not one-size-fits-all — and your modality shouldn’t be either.
