What not to do before electrolysis: A simple checklist

If you’re investing in electrolysis for permanent hair removal, you want the best possible results.

What many people don’t realise is that what you do before your electrolysis appointment can directly affect comfort, healing and how effective your treatment is.

Here’s exactly what NOT to do before your electrolysis appointment.

Don’t wax, thread or pluck

This is the most important rule.

Electrolysis permanently destroys the hair follicle by treating the hair inside it. If you’ve waxed, threaded or tweezed, the hair and root has been removed — which means there’s nothing for us to treat.

If we can’t see the hair, we can’t treat it.

Once a hair has been removed from the root, we have to wait for that follicle to produce a new hair before it can be treated again — and that can take 4–8 weeks. Plucking between sessions can significantly slow your permanent hair removal progress.

❌ Avoid these methods before and during electrolysis treatment:

  • Waxing

  • Threading

  • Tweezing

  • Epilating

✅ If you need to manage hair growth in the meantime, trimming or shaving is completely fine.

Don’t overexpose your skin to strong sunlight

Sun exposure can increase skin sensitivity, which may make treatment less comfortable and slow healing afterwards.

❌ Avoid strong sun, sunbeds and tanning for at least 48 hours before electrolysis, especially if you’re having facial hair removal.

✅ If you’re outdoors, wear SPF 50 and protect the treatment area where possible.

Calm, uninflamed skin responds best.

Don’t use strong active skincare right before treatment

Powerful skincare ingredients can thin or sensitise the skin, increasing irritation during electrolysis.

❌ Avoid using before your appointment:

  • Retinol or retinoids

  • Prescription vitamin A

  • Glycolic, salicylic or lactic acid

  • Chemical exfoliants

  • Benzoyl peroxide

  • Strong scrubs or peels

✅ Keeping your skincare simple before your appointment helps your skin stay balanced and resilient.

If you’re unsure about a product, just ask — it’s always better to check.

Hydration matters

Hydration makes more of a difference than most people realise.

❌ Don’t arrive dehydrated.

Well-hydrated skin conducts energy more effectively, which can support smoother treatment and improved comfort during electrolysis.

✅ Before your appointment:

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Avoid alcohol the night before

Your nervous system plays a role in how you experience sensation, so looking after yourself beforehand genuinely helps.

Good preparation sets the foundation for smooth, effective permanent hair removal — and makes your appointments more comfortable too.

A little preparation goes a long way.

Related FAQs

Q. Can I shave or trim my hair before electrolysis?

A. Yes — shaving or trimming hairs is fine between sessions, but timing matters.

Electrolysis requires visible hair growth so the follicle can be accurately treated. If hair is shaved too close to your appointment, it may be too short to treat effectively.

In most cases, it’s best to allow a few days of growth before your session so hairs are clearly visible. If you’re unsure how much to leave, just ask.

Q. Can I drink coffee before electrolysis?

A. It's best to keep caffeine low before your appointment.

Caffeine can stimulate the nervous system and may make you feel more sensitive during treatment. If you’re particularly sensitive to caffeine, consider reducing or avoiding it for a few hours beforehand.

That said, everyone is different — some clients notice no change at all.

Q. Should I moisturise before my appointment?

A. Light moisturising the night before is absolutely fine.

On the day of treatment, try to arrive with clean skin free from heavy creams, oils or makeup. This allows the skin to be properly cleansed and ensures optimal visibility during electrolysis.

If you use active skincare (such as retinol or exfoliating acids), these should be paused 72 hours beforehand.

Q. Does dehydration affect electrolysis results?

A. Hydration can make a real difference.

Well-hydrated skin conducts energy more effectively, which can support smoother treatment and improved comfort. Dehydrated skin can sometimes feel more sensitive.

In the 24 hours before your appointment:

• Drink plenty of water

• Avoid excess alcohol

• Try to get a good night’s sleep

Looking after your body supports your treatment results.
